cr2 is no good for promulgation is it, because so many places don't accept it. So I need to settle on some other jpg creator. So the two different pics Picasa shows me are 1. I find it quicker than firing up the canon suite. I've also got a cr2 converter i got off the web.
Convert cr2 to jpg windows 10 software#
I do have canon's software and I used to use it to convert the cr2 to jpg before I uploaded to google photos. I can see now how easily they can be different. But there are several programs, such as DropBox, in which you can post raw files for us to download.

)Īs you say, the explanation doesn't need pictures. doesn't matter, those who know the answer wouldn't need to see an example I guess. (I just tried to post an example but cr2 file type is forbidden, it says. There are so many variables that the differences might be in any direction as regards brightness or colour, depending on the individual picture and any settings you may have adjusted. … makers keep their conversion algorithms secret so if you use any other way of creating viewable pictures from CR2 they will be different from JPG from camera or DPP. Some viewing software just pulls that out so, what you see is the same as the camera JPG. One of the things the CR2 file includes is a small copy of the camera's JPG. The maker's own editing software (DPP in your case) uses exactly the same algorithms so if you use DPP the converted CR2 and JPG will look the same. Your camera maker puts algorithms in the camera to create its JPGs and those algorithms take account of any settings you.ve adjusted. The recombination I just mentioned creates a viewable picture, typically (but not necessarily) a JPG. sometimes the cr2 is brighter and sometimes the jpg is the brightest. And sometimes it goes this way and sometimes it goes that way - i.e. When I look at them there's always a shade or brightness difference. That's what's on your CR2 files.īefore you can see a picture from those files the separate colour channels have to be recombined (together with various other operations). It also stores the settings you've made on your camera and a lot of other data. The sensor records the intensity of light through each. There is a set of filters in front of the camera's sensor that divides the light into three wavebands centred in red, green and blue. I have a canon eos400d and it is set to create a cr2 and a jpg of every photo. The best now probably is DxO Photolab3 Elite or Capture One Pro. Time to move to a modern program for more reliability, I use FastStone Viewer (Windows only) for all the routine stuff but it certainly is not a good raw converter. Picasa is old and not supported since Dec 2013 so any cameras produced after then will have problems with raw files.įrankly I would not trust now what Picasa is showing. Picasa (from memory) initially displays the embedded jpeg within the raw file, then after a short pause changes that to the computed jpeg derived from the raw data. Picasa throws up the two files, displays each of them, and that's where I am seeing the difference.įrom what I read in that link it's my understanding right now that perhaps canon's onboard jpg converter isn't as good as I could maybe get.

I use for choice Picasa photo viewer - I am in windows 10 - and then select 'edit in Picasa' and from then on view in that mode - the arrow keys just move me through the pics in that directory. When I view on the camera screen it shows me only one picture.īut when I take the card and put it in my computer I get two files for each picture - a cr2 and a jpg. I will 'reply to the thread' and thereby answer both posts at once.
